Ahh Nursery, our last day!  It's been a very strange year and it seems very strange to be saying goodbye to you like this sad.

You have all been amazing and should be so proud of yourselves and I can't begin to tell you how proud I am of you all.

If you were in class today, you would have been very busy playing with your friends and your own toys.  We would have spent time singing, dancing and listening to stories.  We would have spent time playing in the outdoor area, getting lots of fresh air and spending time with your friends before the long summer holidays.

Today your challenge is to spend your day singing, dancing and having lots of fun.  The weather is feeling warmer and I think you should be able to enjoy some outdoor play! smiley

I have left one last story on the video page for you to listen to at the end of the day.

I will be thinking about you all today and I can't wait to see you again in September.

I love and will miss you all very much but hope that you have a lovely summer!

Stay safe, have fun and make lots of lovely memories

Lots of love

fromheart

Mrs Jones

It is the last week of the school year this week and although it has been very strange and I feel very sad that we haven't spent the last few months sharing lots of lovely experiences in class, I have very much enjoyed seeing your photos and videos heart

I spoke to your parents last week and they all feel that you are now ready for Reception and I know that Mrs Martin is looking forward to having you in her class blush.

I feel very proud that you have all coped so well with the strange situation that we have found ourselves in and I feel confident that you will all settle happily into Reception very quickly in September

Thursday 2nd July

Good morning nursery, your challenge today is an understanding of the world (History) activity.

First I would like you to look at the powerpoint below - Pirates.

* Parents - I use the powerpoint below each time we learn about pirates.  It has lots of facts about how dangerous it was to be a pirate and mentions how they were often killed or drowned.  I find that the children are usually fine with this and quite enjoy learning about pirates (warts and all). You may want to modify your explanation of it.  Feel free to put your own interpretation on it, you know your child best, they are all different! *

Would you like to be a pirate?  I love learning about Pirates but the Pirate life wasn't really as exciting as we believe.  Can you answer some questions about pirates now that you have looked at the slides? Lets see what you can remember.

Where did Pirates get their treasure from?

a. From the bank?  or  b. They took it from other people?

Why did the Pirate flag look so scary?

a. Because Pirates love Halloween?  or  b. To warn people that pirates were on board the ship?

Why did Pirate ships often sink?

a. Because the sea was rough and dangerous?  or  b. Because Pirates like to swim under water?

What did Pirates eat?

a. McDonalds and KFC?  or   b. Salty meat and dry biscuits?

What were Pirate ships like?

a. Lovely, they had swimming pools and cosy beds? or  b. Horrible, dirty and smelly with rats?

Where did Pirates leave their treasure?

a. In the bank?   or   b. On islands?

Why did Pirates make maps?

a. Because they needed to find their grandma's houses?  or  b. So that they could find their treasure?

What did Pirates use telescopes for?

a. To look out for other ships?  or  b. To use as a wooden leg?

My favourite, fictional (pretend) pirate is Captain Jack Sparrow because he is very funny.  Can you draw a picture of your favourite, fictional pirate and say why you like him/her?

Thank you

Mrs Jones

Good afternoon nursery.  I would like you to look at the pirate treasure map below and then design your own treasure map.  You could include a key at the side to explain any symbols you put on your map.  Remember X marks the spot where the treasure is buried!

Thank you,

Mrs Jones

Wednesday 1st July

Tuesday 30th June

Good morning nursery, your challenge this morning is a science (understanding of the world) activity.

You are going to be investigating which objects float on water and which objects sink.

To set up this activity, you will need

  • a large container filled with water.
  • Two containers to sort floating and sinking objects and a range of floating and sinking objects.

Objects you could included for this science activity are:

  • a large rock,
  • a bottle top
  • a wooden peg
  • a lollypop stick
  • a feather
  • a coin
  • a key
  • a gem stone
  • a button
  • a shell
  • a leaf.

Before you begin your investigation -

Can you predict which objects will float and which objects will sink?

Why?

Place one item into the water at a time.

Does it float or sink?

Place the object into the corresponding labelled container.

  • Talk about why some objects sank and others didn’t.
  • Discuss the weight, size and material the object is made of and how this influences the floating ability.
  • Talk about why there were bubbles when some objects sank.

Bottles tops are great for floating when turned over both ways.

  • Can a bottle top hold a small stone and still float?
  • Search around the house for more objects to test if they can float and sink.

After experimenting with the different objects floating and sinking, allow some time for your child to play freely with the water, containers and objects.

You can record your findings through photos, or by folding a page of your doodle book in half length ways and drawing the things which float on one half of the page and the things that sink on the other.

Have fun,

Mrs Jones

Good afternoon nursery.

The first part of your challenge for this afternoon is a creative activity.  I would like you to make the pirate ship that you designed yesterday.

Once you have done that, I would like you to use your science knowledge from this morning to predict whether your ship will float or sink, when placed in water.

Next I would like you to test your ship.

What happened?

Happy sailing,

Mrs Jones

Monday 29th June

Good morning nursery.  I hope you enjoyed your online learning on Friday.  I loved seeing your faces.  The whole experience made me smile all day! smiley  I hope to see you again next week.   If you were unable to join us last week, I would love to see you at 9.30 am this coming Friday morning.

As always on a Monday, your activity for this morning is Weekend News.

Once you have practised your name, I would like you to discuss your weekend news with your grown up and then draw a picture of your news, telling your grown up what you would like to say about It.  You could have a little go at some of your own writing!

Thank you

Mrs Jones

Good afternoon nursery. This afternoon we are going to learn a few facts about pirate ships.  I would like you to begin by looking at the slide show below.

Can you answer the questions below?  Maybe your grown up could video you answering them?

1. What made pirate ships move through the sea?

a. an engine or b. the wind

2. What part of the ship did the pirates have to scrub?

a. the deck or b. the sails

3. What stopped the pirate ship from moving in the sea?

a. the brakes or b. the anchor

4. Where did the pirates stand when they looked out for other ships?

a. the crows nest or b. the balcony

5. What hung from the masts?

a. the pirates clean washing or b. the sails

6. What did the sails catch so that the ship could move?

a. the wind or b. fish

Next I would like you to design your own pirate ship in your doodle book.  Have a think about the materials you could use to make your ship.  You are going to make your ship tomorrow.  You will also be testing your ship on water and so some materials will need to be waterproof.

(Parents our task for tomorrow morning will be a science investigation on floating and sinking. Therefore you won't need to go into too much detail during the designing process about this. We will cover this concept during the investigation)

Happy designing

Mrs Jones wink

Thursday 18th June

Good morning nursery.  Today is going to be very exciting as it is our Virtual Sports Day.  You can take part in each event at home whilst we take part at school.

All the information of timings and events is available under Parent/Carer information - Virtual Sports Day, along with demonstration videos for each event.  By taking part, you will earn points for your class.  You can earn extra bonus points by completing 2 bonus events.

Parents, you can also earn extra points for your child's class by taking part in each event and sending photos into school to  emma.richardson2@salford.gov.uk .  Photos must be sent in before 2.30pm so that Miss Richardson can collate the information and work out the winning class.  Please see the information on the webpage.

In addition to this, your challenge for today is an Understanding of the World and Expressive Art and Design activity.  I would like you to make your own bug hotel for your outdoor space.

You will need -

A suitable container or area in your outdoor area, preferably wooden

Compost

Fertile soil

Pieces of wood (various sizes)

Different sized/shaped stones Bricks Old roof tiles

Drainage tubes

Fir cones

Dry leaves Bark Straw, hay Dead wood/sticks

Plants that will attract insects

Method

1. Choose either an area in your outdoor area or a wooden container and place it on the ground.

2. If the container hasn’t already got holes in, make some holes in the bottom. That will create drainage and let minibeasts crawl in.

3. Fill the container with compost and fertile soil.

4. Use your resources to build various places for minibeasts to live.

5. Woodlice and beetles will like wood/sticks and if stacked, the minibeasts can crawl through them.

6. Plants will attract the crawling bugs like caterpillars, snails and spiders.

7. Butterflies and bees will like nectar-rich flowering plants.

8. It’s up to you how much you put in your bug hotel.

9. Observe the hotel over time and see which minibeasts it attracts.

10. Can you find out which areas each kind of minibeast like best?

Thank you

First I would like you to look around your house and garden for things that begin with the 'g' sound.

I have put a video clip of Geraldine the Giraffe learning the 'g' sound to give you some ideas.

When you have done that, I would like you to have a go at writing the letter g in your doodle book and draw some of the things that you have found that begin with the 'g' sound.

Thank you

Mrs Jones

Good afternoon nursery.

Your challenge for this afternoon is a handwriting activity. I would like you to go to class videos -

Children's Information - School Videos - Nursery - Phonics/Handwriting 17/06/20 (afternoon).

*You will need your doodle book and something to write with.*

When you have watched the video, I would like you to complete the next page of you handwriting pack.

When you have finished all your jobs, there is a story on the school videos page (The Dinosaur Who Lost His Roar) for the end of the day.

Thank you

Mrs Jones

Tuesday 16th June

Good morning nursery.  Your challenge for this morning is an understanding of the word activity followed by and expressive art and design activity.

First of all I would like you to use the internet (with help) to do a bit of research.

I would like you to find out 5 interesting facts about a T-Rex and 5 interesting facts about a Brachiosaurus.

Once you have done that I would like you to imagine that they are both coming round for tea (separately of course because I don't think they would be very good friends!)  With help from your grown up, can you make a list of food you could give your dinosaur friends for tea?

Draw a picture in your doodle book of your dinosaur friends coming to tea at your house.

Your last job for this morning is to watch the video below.  Once you have watched it, you can have a little try to learn the song.  Can you create your own dinosaur dance to go with the song?

Good afternoon nursery.  Your challenge this afternoon is an understanding of the world activity.

I would like you to ask for some help to cut out the dinosaur bones of  the Brachiosaurus from your pack and have a go at putting it together.

*Again parents, like last weeks T-Rex, try not to show your child the picture of how it should look until they have had a go.  Please take some photos for me as I would love to see the results.*

Have fun

Mrs Jones wink

Monday 15th June

Good morning nursery, I hope you've had a lovely weekend playing out in the beautiful sunshine. I received an email with an amazing photo of Alfie's bean plant on Friday which is growing really well.  I also received a fantastic video of Betty, she was investigating things that blow in the wind.  You looked like you were having fun testing materials out with the hairdryer Betty, well done and thank you Alfie and Betty for your emails heart.

Once again it is Monday and we always start our activities off with weekend news.  Once you have practised your name, I would like you to discuss your weekend news with your grown up and then draw a picture of your news, telling your grown up what you would like to say about It.  You could have a little go at some of your own writing!

Thank you

Mrs Jones

Good afternoon nursery.  Your challenge for this afternoon is a phonics, rhyming game, which you can find on the video page of the website.

Children's information - school videos - nursery - Phonics I Spy Rhyming Game (15/06/02 afternoon)

The game is explained in the video. It is a variation on I spy but instead of saying 'Something beginning with...', I use the words  'Something that sounds like...'.

The aim of the game is to select the picture that rhymes with or sounds like the word I say. For example -  I hold up a picture of a dog and some tins and say "I spy something that sounds like frog".

Once you have completed the game on the video, there is a second story video to watch -

'The Wonky Donkey', which you may be familiar.  I have chosen it because it has good examples of rhyming strings.

I would like you to use some of the words from the game to make your own rhyming strings and record these through pictures and words in your doodle books.

Thank you

Mrs Jones

Yesterday I received some lovely photos from Emilia and Betty, well done girls, you have been working hard! yes

Your challenge this morning is a reading activity.  I would like you to look at the slideshow below.  It is another ORT book.  Have a look at the front cover (slide 1) and talk with your grown-up about what you can see.  Can you work out what the story is about?

Read the title together and then look at the rest of the pictures.

Discussion points -

What do you think the story is about?

Who is in the story?

Where do you think the story is taking place?

Have you ever been to either a street fair or a funfair?

What did you see/do?

How do you think the children feel?

How do you know?

Have you had your face painted?

When you had your face panted, what were you? (eg a lion, butterfly Spiderman etc)

In your doodle book, I would like you to draw a picture of yourself with a painted face.  If you have a photo, you could stick that into your book too.

Thank you

Mrs Jones

Good afternoon nursery.  This afternoon, I would like you to do an understanding of the world, science investigation.

This activity will involve you going outside.  I have checked the weather forecast and it is going to be showery (some heavy) sad

Never mind because if it is too wet, you can do this activity indoors toosmiley

You are going to investigate which materials can be blown by the wind!

For this activity I would like you to look around your house and garden for items and materials you can test in the wind.

Items could include -

leaves, Paper, Cardboard, Wool, Wood, Bricks, Stones, Twigs, Straws, Tinfoil, Feathers etc.

When you have collected your materials, I would like you to look at each of them, feel them, throw them in the air, do they make a noise when they land on the floor? (be careful if you have a brick or stones, watch your feet!).

Are they heavy or light?

Which items/materials do you think will blow in the wind?

Test them!

Which items blow in the wind?

Record your results in your doodle book.

Fold your page in half and draw the items that blow in the wind on one side and the items that don't blow in the wind on the other side.

* if it is too wet, stay indoors and try creating your own wind wink

 How did you create wind?

A hair dryer, blowing through a straw, wafting with a piece of paper etc

Have Fun

Mrs Jones

Don't forget the story on the video page laugh

I would like you to cut out all the statement and dinosaur cards.

Put all the statement cards in a pile and lay out the picture cards out in a row.

Ask your grown-up to read the statements from the card at the top of the pile.

Who is it?

Can you answer all the questions for each picture card?

When you have completed this activity I would like you to draw some of the dinosaurs in your doodle book and them label (write the dinosaur name next to it).

Thank you
